And speaking of the card game in my previous post, I was reminded of this painting about seven dogs.

One poker table.

And one secret unfolding beneath it.

Every player appears completely absorbed in the game, but the real action is not taking place on top of the table.

Look underneath it.

One of the dogs is secretly passing an ace to his partner.

His partner already has three aces in front of him, and this hidden card will give him the fourth.

Meanwhile, the other dogs study their cards, guard their chips, and suspect nothing.

And this is where the title of the painting becomes a dark joke.

Cassius Marcellus Coolidge called the painting:

A Friend in Need

Coolidge painted it in 1903 as part of a series commissioned by Brown & Bigelow to advertise cigars.

But that advertisement later became one of the most famous poker scenes in the history of art.

The dogs make the scene look amusing, but their behavior is entirely human.

There is the mastermind…

His accomplice…

And the others, who still believe everyone is playing by the rules.

The winning card was never dealt on the table…

It was passed to him by a friend.

You pathetic fools … I can still see every dirty card being passed beneath the table, and I know exactly which human dogs are passing them.
