Redbuds

UP 6379, a GE AC4400CW built for Southern Pacific in July 1995 as SP 333, provides extra muscle to westbound double manifest MNLNP as the lone middle DPU on it's journey to the largest rail yard in the world; Bailey Yard in North Platte. With another 500 miles or so to go on it's westward journey, this Southern Pacific survivor still soldiers on as slowly inches through UP's 18th Street Yard in Kansas City. The train took a brief stop at 18th before hitting the Kansas Subdivision, and can be seen peeking through the blooms on a trackside redbud tree. Given that SP had rights along this route between 1980 and 1996, it was especially nice to see scarlet and grey return for a moment.

Junkerhaus, Lemgo, Germany

I finally visited the Junkerhaus in Lemgo, Germany. It’s one of the places or objects that’s always mentioned in any outside art publication, even if Junker was a trained artist and carpenter and not a schizophrenic or naïve artist. I assume he was a bit of a loner working excessively on his art house (“Gesamtkunstwerk”) and then died in 1912. It’s fascinating that his house has survived the centuries, even if it was neglected for a long time. Until the late 80s, you could get a key and tour it yourself, but people broke and stole stuff. There was water damage, so early in the 2000s, the city restored it and made it a museum. Check out their website; there is a fantastic virtual tour!
