All around the world there are big bluish/grayish herons that look like one another, sometimes strikingly so. Great Blue Heron (North America), Gray Heron (Europe), and Cocoi Heron (South America) are one example of closely related species that form a clade and share a recent common ancestor. A related cluster of species includes the Goliath Heron (largest of the group) and Black-headed Heron (both found in Africa), Humbolt's Heron (Madagascar), and the disheveled beast pictured here, the Great-billed Heron. It occurs from southeast Asia through most of the Indonesian islands, New Guinea, and into northern Australia. It is strongly associated with coastlines but also lives in mangroves and freshwater rivers, sometimes following them further inland. The diet of this species is somewhat poorly known, but they have been observed eating fish (including mudskippers in Borneo) and crabs. The large bill suggests they take large prey. The individual seen here has worn feathers and appears to be undergoing a molt. Daintree River, Queensland, Australia
